Research tells us that a skill is better perfected if it is practiced frequently, in smaller bits, than once in a while in larger bits. The 5 Minute Edit is a timed, proof-reading skill practice wherein students find errors in a short passage in 5 minutes. Then they can record their progress on a chart which can easily be pasted on the inside cover of a notebook. Teacher's Instructions for use are included and a Score Record Chart for the students. Use stories in any order. Insert your own number in the box for record-keeping purposes.
I have had good success with this drill in helping students to not only become better proof-readers, but also to enable them to do the job more quickly and efficiently with their own writing.
